Milwaukee Update

Just to give you a head’s up…

Over the upcoming weeks, you might hear frequent accusations about my seven years as Archbishop of Milwaukee by tort attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who is representing claimants in the current bankruptcy proceedings in that wonderful archdiocese.

Those who are familiar with Anderson’s usual tactics tell me we can figure to hear repeated charges about my “irresponsibility.”  It seems he believes that it helps his case if my name is muddied, no matter how unjustly.

You may have already seen two of his preposterous charges have already made headlines here and in Milwaukee.

One claims I “hid” $130 million of archdiocesan assets.  As I commented when I heard of this incredible slur, I did no such thing.  Yes, I returned – at the insistence of our auditors and lay finance council — $70 million of parish savings (not archdiocesan money) back to the people to whom it belonged.  And, yes, I made sure the $60 million of “perpetual care funds” for our Catholic cemeteries was, as demanded by state law, secure.

Two, he finds fault with me for asking the Vatican to laicize an abusive priest.  Seems I acted “too slowly” – even though the priest had already been removed from ministry long before, and was not allowed to act as a priest – and that I was only worried about “scandal” – even though the perpetrator’s victims had told me they were, in fact, “scandalized” that the priest had not been laicized.  He includes the now-obligatory punch to the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, even though the future pope “defrocked” the abuser at my request.  Can’t win!

Keep in mind that some of those now lined-up against the Archdiocese of Milwaukee have stated in the past that they would “sue the s—“ out of the archdiocese, and would not stop until an “out of business” sign was posted in front of every parish, school, and church charitable center.

Given such motives, don’t be surprised by further frequent attacks on me.  Although, sadly, some media here and in Milwaukee seem to give these groundless attacks immediate publicity, I do not intend to spend a lot of time responding to them.

I’d be happy to provide the truth to the respected bankruptcy judge, if so asked.

Sorry to bother you with all of this, but I want to keep you posted.

Thanks.  A blessed Lent!

Many, many prayers and much love for you Archbishop Dolan! You are wonderful and continue to inspire my family and I here in Milwaukee! May our dear Lord wrap His arms closely around you now and always!

  2. Ryan Adorjan says:

Go get ‘em, Archbishop Dolan! You are an inspiration to me and others like me who are discerning the priesthood; thanks for being the model for us and keep doing what you’re doing!!

  3. It’s a shame that a lawyer is trying to defame you, Archbishop Dolan. Let us continue to pray that this conflict will be resolved in a fair matter. I highly doubt we even need it to be fair, as the Archbishop did nothing wrong!

  4. Liz F says:

Well, at least you have the Blessed Virgin Mary on your side! She will be with you through all of this. We will pray for you and I will try to remember this specific intention when we say our family rosary. We do pray for you in our daily prayers. I guess this Jeffrey Anderson is the one that really needs our prayers. God bless you and all of your efforts!

  5. Peter says:

Give’em Hell Archbishop, sounds like they need a little heat to burn their ash

  6. Mark S. says:

Hang in there, your Excellency. We Philadelphia Catholics are in the middle of our own tornadoes and know what it feels like. Prayers for you and perhaps I could beg prayers for us to the south?

  7. Chris Roberts says:

This will give you comfort Archbishop Dolan:

The Endless Crucifixion: Jesus Christ succumbed on The Cross at three o’clock in the afternoon. The Devil chose the opposite hour to Christ’s death and claimed three o’clock in the morning. Separated by twelve hours and at the coming of ear…ly morning’s time, they are connected numerically at the precise moment the hour strikes three o’clock.

The Wicked One quickly uses this minute, for should he use a second more, he will perish. The Devil takes Jesus down from The Cross, reincarnates him, talks soothingly to him as a brother would, then, treacherously, nails him back to The Cross and watches, enthralled, as Jesus dies in excruciating agony again.

And thus, without stop, it has proceeded: morning after morning, since the crucifixion of Christ. The Devil reigns ever Crucificvictorius.

  8. Joe V says:

You are the right man for the job. We all support you and the Church.

You are a great inspiration to us all! Stay strong!!

  10. Richard Arnold says:

It is time we catholic stand up for our priest and for you Archbishop Dolan. I am tired of staying quite while people attack our priest and the church.

  11. waldo says:

I am praying for you. You know ultimatly: the truth will make us free.

  12. Hi Archbishop,

Thanks for this post. I am a native Wisconsinite and was very saddened by the abuse by the priest you mentioned. I was also very dismayed by the irresponsible way the NYT handled its “investigation,” not even bothering to contact the canonical Church judge in the case. And now these slurs on your character from Mr. Anderson…

Well, God is in control as the Church seeks to make amends for sins committed, all the while holding to the fullness of truth in Faith and Morals. Not an easy balance by any stretch, but one you have and are achieving admirably in both Wisconsin and NYC. Keep up the great work and be assured of my prayers.

    Sincerely,

    Brian N.

  13. Nita Steck says:

NO ONE has more integrity than you and this Milwaukee stuff is a sad attack from angry, hateful people. We are proud to know you and call you Friend. Hang in there and be the wonderful pastor of the people as you have always been.

  14. Dave Steck says:

I have known Archbishop Dolan for over twenty-five years and there is no finer person on the face of the earth. I am so proud to call him a friend and cherish the times my family has been with him. Lawyers like Jeffrey Anderson are the type of individuals that taint the legal profession. They will tackle anything for the chance to fatten their wallets. Hang in there Archbishop Dolan, as the Lord will prevail.

  15. Gina Nakagawa says:

    Dear Archbishop Dolan,

I would say, \Eat them for breakfast,\ but this is Lent and you know better than anyone that we can only eat meat in small amounts at the principle meal. All joking aside, I pray for you and all the priests, bishops and cardinals who are being so sorely tried in this age of Satan’s latest assault against Christ’s bride. God bless and keep you. Mary Mother Mary hold you in her loving arms.

  16. Irene says:

My prayers are with the catholic faithful of Milwaukee whose leaders bankrupted their church.

  17. Andrew Piacente says:

Don’t even try to get along with “the media” Your Excellency. They have declared war on the true Church of Jesus Christ years ago and no matter how much Church officials suck up to them, they will attack us , esp. The New York Times. Any Catholic who reads the NYT deserves whatever they get. I haven’t purches a newspaper in close to 20 years and know more current events than most folks.

Thankfully, most of these “media” outlets are slowly dying a natural death. They appeal to very few. The Net is the way to go now. There is an ocean of good Catholic information and news out here and every Catholic should be looking for them. I read and discover these sites daily, 7 days per weel, Sites like, http://www.thecatholictreasurechest.com/, http://www.biblechristiansociety.com/, http://douglawrence.wordpress.com/page/21/, EWTN.com, http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/index.html, http://www.spiritdaily.com/, there are many many more. I make it my mission to send these sites to as many Catholics as I can. Catholic education is a disaster in the West and sites such as these exist to educate.

Expect more of this Archbishop but know this, these are multitudes of us out here who will stand shoulder to shoulder with you. The gates of hell WILL NOT prevail. Yes we are losing many battles in the West because of soft leadership but they will not prevail. Our Lord told us so.

Finally I would like to admonish Catholic men. Jewish and Muslim men would never allow these attacks on their leadership. Real men would organize boycotts and fight back against unwarranted bigoted attacks. IMO too many of our men are akin to sheep. Everyone of you should belong to the catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, http://www.catholicleague.org/, the premier defender of our beloved Church.

Boycott these attackers. Get you family and friends to do the same. Help our Archbishop and other good leaders in our Church.

  18. Andrew Piacente says:

One more thing. As one who is never at a loss for words of criticism for weak kneed Priest, Bishops and Cardinals who fear the predominant culture by being afraid to preach the true Catholic faith in all of its glory, and having corresponded with Bishops Chaput, Bruskewits, Burke, Cardinals Pell, Arinze and others (NY Bishops never answer), I have been rendered absolutley speechless by one of Bishop Dolan’s recent moves.

The joy I felt when I found out that His Excellency chose Father Leonard Villa of St. Eugene’s Parish as Vicar of Yonkers is one of the highlights of my life and will one day be considered one of of Bishop Dolan’s best moves.

This holy Priest, IMO has to be one of the best Priests on the planet. He speaks fluent Spanish, Italian, teaches the children of the parish Greek and has homilies that I think should be recorded and heard by all Catholics.

Thank you Archbishop. You are slowly renewing my faith in this Archdiocese which I considered a catechetical wasteland. The daily Rosaries I pray for this Church may be finally paying off and you will be attacked for it incessantly no doubt. God bless you and keep up the good work. We are out hear when you need us.

Always remember. Our Lord said you will be hated because of Him but remember, the hated Him first.

  19. Anita says:

We stand by you, Archbishop Dolan. You are in our prayers always. God Bless.

  20. Your Excellency,

Be assured of our continued prayers for you – and our entire Church – in our little prayer corner in the Fenelon Clan Abode where we’ve put our Blessed Mother on special alert!

  21. Suzan Zaner says:

St John Vianney, pray for Archbishop Dolan and all of our priests, bishops and our Holy Father. Amen

  22. Gabriel Espinosa says:

Excellency, I am sorry about the error in my prior comment. Here is my comment with the correct link!!

Excellency, sorry to be communicating with you through this venue, but there is no other manner with which to do so. You need to know that Fordham University will be hosting the “Vagina Monologues” on March 25th, 2011. If you have access to Facebook, here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188647251171236

I trust and hope that you will deal with this accordingly. There is no need for those Jesuits to allow Catholic youth to be exposed to such depraved vulgarity.

  23. Matt in Racine, Wis. says:

Thoughts and prayers to you Archbishop Dolan! Because of all the positive things you did for us, and still do, you’ll always be a part of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

  24. Mary says:

The silence is stunning on the sin of active homosexuality. Active homosexuality is in my opinion at the heart of the priest scandal. Am I wrong? The majority of crimes were same sex –homosexual men on young men. Yet the Church addresses the problem as one of men and children. It cooperates with the lie. Isn’t facing the truth necessary for penance?
