Shootin’ School – and That’s the Good News

shootin school 2014 picture 1st week

It may be time for a new name – but certainly not a new focus – for the Shootin’ School, a program that partners with Catholic Charities CYO in Staten Island to help children perfect their basketball moves while encouraging them to rally around those in need.

Throughout the summer, children grades three through eight participated in four-day clinics to perfect their layups, free throws and all-round basketball shooting. Several of the children come from low-income families. They received scholarships so they could play with their classmates and peers.

Then, last week, on the program’s final day its founder, Anthony Passalaqua, provided the players with pizza lunch in return for food they brought to help replenish the Catholic Charities food pantry in Port Richmond.

CYO: Bball, Service and So Much More

Catholic Charities’ Monge Codio — known best, perhaps, for Catholic Charities-sponsored pilgrimages he made to Haiti to help those hurt by the 2010 earthquake disaster and the American Haitians for Economic Advancement & Development program he founded — celebrated his three-year anniversary as Director of Operations for CYO’s Hudson Valley Region during a live broadcast last week on AM1300 WRCR.

He spoke not only about ongoing help for folks still reeling from the Haiti disaster but also about a host of activities and initiatives offered by Catholic Charities CYO.

For example, more than 17,000 youth participate in CYO NY’s basketball program alone.

Yet CYO offers far more than the basketball program for which it is best known, said this former college basketball coach whose resume includes stints coaching at Concordia, Iona and Northeastern University.

CYO serves children from third through eighth grade and offers, for example, art and essay contests, scouting, retreats, track and field contests, soft ball and even a special golf program for children with developmental disabilities.

“We welcome everyone,” Monge said.

CYO Tips Off Another Win

By Alice Kenny

Catholic Charities CYO basketball is tipping off another win. Enrollment is up for the 2012-2013 girls and boys basketball season, says CYO Director Edwin Broderick.

The teams provide exercise, a healthy recreational outlet, guidance and a sense of community for children and teenagers throughout the more than 4,000-square mile Archdiocese of New York.

Here are some numbers to cheer:

  •  1600 teams throughout the
    Archdiocese of New York
  • 637 teams in Westchester County
  •  403 teams in Staten Island
  •  251 teams in Rockland County
  •   82 teams in Orange County
  •   49 teams in Ulster County
  •   37 teams in Dutchess County

“Our success  and growth would not be possible without the dedication and  support of our 4,000 volunteers, the hard work of our county  directors and the leadership and support of Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Sullivan and Catholic Charities Community Services Executive Director  Beatriz  Diaz  Taveras,” Mr. Broderick said.
