President Obama and Pope Francis to Meet; Discuss Shared Commitment to Fight Poverty

President Barack Obama will meet with Pope Francis for the first time on March 27 at the Vatican to discuss the Pope’s commitment – made manifest through Catholic Charities – to serve the basic needs of the poor, troubled, frail and oppressed of all religions.

“The President looks forward to discussing with Pope Francis their shared commitment to fighting poverty and growing inequality,” said a White House news release distributed by CNN and other media outlets. Across the developed world, inequality has increased,” Obama said.

‘How can it be,’ Pope Francis wrote, ‘that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points.’

Honoring Victims of 9/11

On this, the twelfth anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy, we honor and pray for its victims and for all who suffer from terrorism and struggle for peace.

Hundreds gathered this morning at the site of the fallen World Trade Center towers and paused in silence to mark the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower — the opening salvo of a terrorist attack that brought down the iconic buildings, killed 2,977 people and launched more than a decade of war, reports CNN. Bagpipers broke the silence, and family members of victims of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and the 2001 attack began a solemn reading of the names of those killed at the site. The 9/11 attack killed 2,753 people in New York, including 403 police and firefighters.
