By Ma Teresa Protasio
I started running seriously about three years ago. Running makes me healthier. It has allowed me lots of bonding time with my husband as we run around the Philippines where we live and even in other countries such as in the upcoming NYC ING Marathon.
I’m a physician by profession and I advocate a healthy, active lifestyle for everyone I meet including my patients. This resolve became even stronger when my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I knew I had to keep my body and mind healthy.
That’s why more than ten years ago I decided to find time to exercise regularly. I tried several fitness regimens, but it was running that captivated me. I found it challenging. Running gives me a certain “high”, relieves stress and keeps me alert. It tested my self-discipline and endurance level.
This time I will be running not only for my advocacy but to raise funds for the Catholic Charities of New York. This charity’s mission is to provide a healthy environment for those in need. A perfect fit to my personal mission. This is my way of giving back to God for the gift of life and health.
