Calling all budding track stars

Friday, April 19th, 2013

By Alice Kenny

From the Pee Wee Dash to the Boys Long Jump, children representing eight parish teams competed in the first Developmental Track Meet of season on Sunday, April 14.  Two dozen “CYO unattached” runners (CYO children in parishes currently not fielding a track team) joined 225 CYO members on – finally — this perfect, sunny spring day.

They raced and received medals at the top-tier facility Mount St Michael Academy in the Bronx.

CYO has been working hard to provide a great experience for the children of the CYO Track & Field Community. With the addition of clinics with Olympic Athletes and new meets and events in some of the metropolitan region’s top facilities, CYO hopes to build upon the momentum gained over the past year.

Registration is now open for the April 21 CYO Developmental Clinic and Track Meet.  It will be held at Mt. Saint Michael Academy, 4300 Murdock Ave., Bronx, NY  10466.

The Iona College track team will be offering a pre-meet clinic for CYO athletes starting at 12:30 pm.

(Use this registration if your parish does not have a track program but you are a member of a parish or school, grades K-8 of the Archdiocese of NY)

(Use this registration link if you are the team coach or parish coordinator.

Registration is done on ny.milesplit.com . This is open for ALL CYO Programs.)

Free College Basketball Game Admission For CYO Players

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

By Alice Kenny

Catholic Charities CYO participants are celebrating CYO Day — Parts I, II and III – with free admission to local college basketball games.

CYO players celebrated Part I on December 29 when the Fordham Women’s Team faced off against Lafayette – and lost 54 -50.

Next, players attended CYO Day last Sunday, January 13, at Fordham University as the men’s team faced off against U. Mass- and lost again by just four points, 77-73.  CYO players and their families  received free admission to the game plus a pizza party.

CYO Day Part III finishes off this Sunday, January 20 for a Women’s Basketball game at Iona College against Lafayette.

Are you a CYO player and would like to attend?  Just wear your CYO jerseys and get into the game for free.

We Are All Creatures of One Family: St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Do you respect all living things, great and small? If so, you’re in good company; so did St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day we celebrate on October 4th. Because of  his love for all of God’s creatures, St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and the environment.

Churches and organizations around the world are celebrating the feast day in many ways. Here are some ways to join the celebration:

  • The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops asked friends and followers to send in pictures of their pets. View the album of adorable animals.
  • Some churches are inviting parishioners to bring in their pets for a Blessing of the Animals. Fittingly, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in New York held their Blessing of Animals on Sunday, September 30th. See pictures from the blessing.
  • If you’d like to share with others the joy of interacting with animals, consider volunteering for Pet Therapy on Staten Island. When you bring Fluffy or Fido to one of the three Catholic Charities Community Services Senior Centers on SI, you’ll get to see the positive effect your pet can have on the men and women there.
