Meet Team Catholic Charities Runners in the TCS New York City Marathon

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

PrintCatholic Charities is one of the official charity participants in the 2014 TCS NYC Marathon.

There are only a few ways to get into this exclusive event:

  • Elite runners qualify based on running time.
  • Lucky ones – about 6% – get selected by lottery.
  • New York Road Runners qualify by running 9 races and volunteering for one.

And remarkable people qualify by running for charity.

During the next five months, twelve Team Catholic Charities New York runners will dedicate themselves to two challenges: training to run 26.2 miles through every borough of New York City, and fundraising for The St. Nicholas Project, an initiative that helps New York families in need.

Response to the opportunity to run with Team Catholic Charities New York was great.  We are now honored to announce our running team for the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon. Starting this month, we will be announcing one runner every week who has been accepted to run the Marathon with Team Catholic Charities NY.

Run in the World’s Biggest Marathon for the World’s Greatest Cause

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Join Team Catholic Charities for the ING New York City Marathon.

Race numbers are striking:

  • 26.2-mile course winding through all five boroughs in the Greatest City in the World
  • 100,000-plus race applicants
  • 37,000 racing participants
  • 2,000,000 spectators

The need you will be running for is striking as well:

  • 40,000 New York school children have no place to call home
  • 365,000 people look for work in New York City every day but cannot find it
  • One in four families live in poverty
  • 1,400,000 New Yorkers – that’s one out of every six of our neighbors – rely daily on emergency food
  • Tens of thousands of people left  homeless after Hurricane Sandy lost their furniture, clothing and all that they owned.
  • Thousands still struggle to recover

Team Catholic Charities runners train for top physical condition to cross the finish line AND  cut back on our neighbors’ growing need.

Catholic Charities, partnering with  New York Road Runners, is an official Charity partner in this year’s ING New York City Marathon.  Our ten-person team plans to raise $30,000 to directly benefit our St. Nicholas Project.

Catholic Charities’ St. Nicholas Project provides:

  • job training and computer literacy classes to help New Yorkers find work
  • food pantries to make sure hungry New Yorkers have food
  • school supplies so children in need can keep up with their classmates
  • essential items including towels, sheets, blankets, coats, hats, gloves, scarves and pajamas so that New Yorkers stay warm all year.

Run the Inside Lane with Team Catholic Charities in the NY ING Marathon

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

By Alice Kenny

It’s National Running Day today — June 5 — and runners are rallying.

Just six months since Superstorm Sandy shut down the  2012 ING New York City Marathon and two months since the Boston Marathon bombing, runners are lacing their sneakers and preparing to take to the road.

Join us at Team Catholic Charities to run the 2013 ING New York City Marathon.

There are only a few ways to get into this exclusive event. These include elite runners who qualify based on running time. Lucky ones – just a few percent –  get selected through a lottery. Not-so-lucky ones who qualified but couldn’t run in last year’s canceled race get another try.  Members of New York Road Runners qualify by running nine races and volunteering for one.

And remarkable people qualify by running for charity.

And here’s the great news.  Catholic Charities is an official charity partner.

You can become one of the remarkable people running by qualifying for one of Catholic Charities’ ten elite spots.
