The first step toward cultivating respect for all human life is to recognize that we are God's children, created in His image and likeness. This is why John Paul II's Theology of the Body is so important- it helps us to understand that we are not objects. We have an obligation to promote this truth.

I would just underscore that some \progressives\ in the Church exclusively focus on poverty work with no attention to pro-life issues. This is a false dichotomy. When you help someone choose life, you come face to face with a host of other issues. Cardinal O'Connor recognized that 25 years ago. The economic issues go hand in hand with men abdicating their resposnibilities to protect and provide and with the destruction of the family. And we need to address both material and spiritual poverty. And we need to do this in our communities and in our parishes on a face-to-face basis. Moms want to make sure their children will be protected but they are also looking for peace in their souls. Just like the rest of us.
